A Quiet Place: Day One

First up, it’s time to be silent and try to escape aliens, this time in New York City in A Quiet Place: Day One, starring Lupita Nyong’o as she plays a woman trying to find a way to get out of the city. 

Also, premiering is part one of the Kevin Costner-directed Western Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1, which takes place in the West during the Civil War. Additionally, we get the documentary I Am: Celine Dion, which gives us an inside look at the superstar singer’s life after discovering that she has a life-altering illness.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: June 24 – 30, 2024

A Quiet Place: Day One

A Quiet Place: Day One   (2024)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: A Quiet Place: Day One takes place on the first day of the alien invasion. Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) and her pet cat must survive in an ever-isolated New York City. Sam tries to figure out a way out while evading the bloodthirsty alien creatures with ultrasonic hearing.

What to Watch For: This is the first of the A Quiet Place films not to be directed by John Krasinski. Krasinski, while he did not write the screenplay, he did contribute to the story with screenwriter/director Michael Sarnoski.

Word on the Street:  The studio has stated that this is more of a spin-off than a sequel of A Quiet Place: Part II. 

My Take: Although several big-name directors were considered for the film, indie filmmaker Michael Sarnoski was picked to helm the movie based on his outstanding 2021 film Pig, which starred Nicolas Cage.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1   (2024)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 spans the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, as the film looks at the people who made up the Old West at a time of conflict. The story is told through the lens of families, friends, and foes as America expanded its boundaries.

What to Watch For:  This is Kevin Costner’s first directorial effort since his 2003 film Open Range.

Word on the Street: The films span over fifteen years and are divided into two parts, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.  

My Take: The film has a cast that includes Will Patton, Kathleen Quinlan, Thomas Haden Church, Luke Wilson, Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, and Tom Payne.

Daddio

Daddio   (2023)

Rating:  R

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary:  In Daddio, a woman (Dakota Johnson) takes a cab ride from JFK to the city. On the way, she converses with a widower cab driver (Sean Penn), who has a habit of asking questions. Sometimes it’s easier to discuss your personal life and loves with a stranger. 

What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Christy Hall, known for creating the TV series I Am Not Okay with This.

Word on the Street: Daisy Ridley was originally attached to the role but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. 

My Take: I love the story that Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson are neighbors. When the producers discussed the project with Johnson, they said they were looking for a ‘Sean Penn-like actor.’ Johnson then offered to show Penn the script, and he accepted the role.

I Am: Celine Dion

I Am: Celine Dion   (2024)

Release Date:  Premiering on Prime Video on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. 

Summary: The documentary I Am: Celine Dion gives the audience a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic singer, her Vegas residency, and her struggle with a life-altering illness that Celine vows to overcome and be on the stage again. 

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Irene Taylor, known for her 2009 Oscar-nominated documentary short subject, The Final Inch.

Word on the Street: The film gives us an inside look at how Celine Dion is dealing with the rare neurological disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).

My Take: I love that Dion is doing this documentary to bring attention to SPS. 

A Family Affair

A Family Affair  (2024)

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: In A Family Affair, Zara (Joey King) has been a personal assistant to super mega movie star Chris Cole (Zac Efron), a selfish, demanding womanizer. The job has taken a toll on Zara and, fed up dealing with Chris and his constant demands, she quits. Soon after, to her horror, she discovers that her widowed mother, Brooke (Nicole Kidman), has begun a romance with Zara’s former boss. 

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Richard LaGravenese, who was nominated for a 1992 Oscar for his screenplay of The Fisher King. 

Word on the Street:  Joey King is known for her Emmy-nominated role in The Act and her performance as Elle Evans in The Kissing Booth trilogy for Netflix.

My Take:  Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman starred together in the 2012 film The Paperboy.

Revival69: The Concert That Rocked the World

Revival69: The Concert That Rocked the World    (2022)

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Revival69: The Concert That Rocked the World is about the legendary 1969 Toronto Rock and Roll Revival music festival.

What to Watch For: The film is famous for John Lennon’s first performance with The Plastic Ono Band, which triggered his decision to leave The Beatles.

Word on the Street: The documentary uses behind-the-scenes footage of the performances of legendary rock icons Little Richard, The Doors, Chuck Berry, and Alice Cooper.

My Take: The documentary won the Audience Award at the 2024 Florida Film Festival.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person   (2023)

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person is about Sasha (Sara Montpetit), who, early in her undead life, was given a diagnosis that every vampire should be without, empathy. Unable to kill to meet her need for blood, Sasha meets a young man, Paul (Félix-Antoine Bénard), who is perfect for her; he has suicidal tendencies. The only problem, Sasha starts falling for Paul. What’s a young vampire to do?

What to Watch For: The film won four awards at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is from Ariane Louis-Seize, known for her award-winning short films.

My Take: I am a huge vampire film fan and can’t wait to see this unique version of the genre.

Diane von Furinstenberg: Woman in Charge

Release Date:  Premiering on Hulu on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. 

Summary: The documentary Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge focuses on the life and work of Diane von Furstenberg, a woman who broke barriers in a predominantly male field, creating a multi-million dollar fashion empire.

What to Watch For: The film includes interviews with Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, and Fran Lebowitz.

Word on the Street: The film premised at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

My Take: Diane von Furstenberg is famous not only for her designs but also for sleeping with some of the most famous men of her time, including Ryan O’Neal and Warren Beatty.

Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi

Summary: In Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi, Seishiro Nagi is a lazy high school sophomore best known for his catchphrase, ‘annoying.’ Seishiro’s world is changed when his classmate Reo discovers he has a genuine talent for soccer. Soon, Seishiro receives an invitation to the Blue Lock Project, and there, he is challenged beyond his wildest dreams.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the award-winning manga by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura.

Word on the Street:  The film will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles as well as dubbed in English.

My Take: This is a spin-off of the Blue Lock TV series.

Confessions of a Wandering Saint

Chronicles of a Wandering Saint    (2023)

Release Date:  In selected theaters on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: Chronicles of a Wandering Saint takes place in a small rural village in Argentina. Rita Lopez, a deeply religious but ultra-competitive person, discovers that staging a miracle could be her ticket to sainthood.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for three Film Independent Spirit Awards. 

Word on the Street: The movie is from award-winning director Tomás Gómez Bustillo, known for his 2020 short film Museum of Fleeting Wonders.

My Take: Critics who saw the film at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival thought it was one of the best of the festival.
