A Look at the 11 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘The Bikeriders,’ ‘Thelma,’ and More!

Curious about the new movies coming out this week? We’ve got you covered with all the releases and their trailers!

First up is a gritty film about a biker gang in the 1960s called The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. We also get Thelma, which tells the story of a 93-year-old woman who gets taken for $10,000 dollars in a phone scam and is out to get her money back. The film stars Oscar nominee June Squib and the late Richard Roundtree. 

Adding to the mix is a new film from Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), Kinds of Kindness, that stars an all-star cast including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe. And a drama, Fancy Dance, starring last year’s Best Actress Oscar winner Lily Gladstone, is out this week also!

New Movies Coming Out This Week: June 17, 2024, – June 23, 2024

The Bikeriders  (2023)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024. 

Summary: In The Bikeriders, it’s the mid-1960s, and after a chance encounter at a local bar, Kathy (Jodie Comer) becomes involved with Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of a biker club named The Vandals. The biker club is led by Johnny (Tom Hardy), and under his leadership, the club is starting to change. It’s a change that will force Benny to choose whether to stay with Kathy or The Vandals. 

What to Watch For: The movie is from filmmaker Jeff Nichols, known for his films Take Shelter (2011), Mud (2012), and Loving (2016).

Word on the Street:  The film is loosely based on an actual biker gang that still exists.

My Take: The cast includes Mike Faist, Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, Damon Herriman and Norman Reedus.

Thelma  (2024)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024.

Summary: Thelma is about 93-year-old Thelma Post (June Squibb), who gets duped into giving away 10,000 dollars in a phone scam. With the help of a few friends, Thelma decides to go on a treacherous quest across the city to get her money back. 

What to Watch For: The film won the Narrative Feature Film Competition at the 2024 Sarasota Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The Oscar-nominated actress June Squibb has been acting in feature films since 1990, but this is her first starring role.

My Take: Richard Roundtree (Shaft (1971)), who plays Thelma’s friend who helps her on her quest, passed away last year. This was his final film role. 

Kinds of Kindness  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:   In theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024.

Summary: Kinds of Kindness is a trilogy of stories about a man who tries to take control of his life, a police officer whose wife has become seemingly a different person, and a woman who searches for someone with a special ability.

What to Watch For: All three stories share the same cast, including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, and Joe Alwyn.

Word on the Street: The film is from five-time Oscar nominee Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his films The Lobster (2015), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), and Poor Things (2023), which won four Oscars, including Best Actress for Emma Stone.

My Take: I love the fact that while almost all the actors play different roles in each story, one actor portrays the same person in all three stories, which connects all three parts.

Janet Planet   (2023)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024.

Summary: Janet Planet is about 11-year-old Lucy (Zoe Ziegler), who is spending the summer of 1991 with her mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), at their home. As the summer goes along, three strangers enter Janet’s world and are captivated by her and her very insightful daughter. 

What to Watch For: The movie is the debut film of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker.

Word on the Street: Janet Planet had its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival.

My Take: Julianne Nicholson is best known for her roles on Ally McBeal and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, but I first discovered her on the 2000 T.V. series The Others.

Fancy Dance  (2023)

Rating:  R

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024, and streaming on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Summary: In Fancy Dance, Jax (Lily Gladstone) is obsessed with finding where her missing sister has disappeared to. Jax’s sister has left behind Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) in Jax’s care, much to the dismay of Jax’s father, Frank (Shea Whigham). At the risk of losing custody, Jax sets out for the state powwow, hoping to track down Roki’s mother before the ceremonies begin. 

What to Watch For: Gladstone worked on the film during breaks from her Oscar-winning performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.

Word on the Street: The movie was a hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Audience Award at the 2023 Mill Valley Film Festival.

My Take: The movie was partly shot on the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation in Oklahoma. 

Black Barbie: A Documentary  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  Premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. 

Summary: Black Barbie: A Documentary chronicles the journey of three former Mattel workers who questioned why Barbie didn’t look like them and then made it happen.

What to Watch For: The movie is from award-winning filmmaker Laqueria Davis, known for the film 1in 3 (2010) and Light in Dark Places (2019).

Word on the Street: The film won two awards at the 2023 Sidewalk Film Festival. 

My Take: I missed the film at the Atlanta Film Festival, so I can’t wait to see it in the theater.

The Exorcism  (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024.

Summary: In The Exorcism, a troubled actor, Anthony Miller (Russel Crowe), is known for his past addictions. When he exhibits disruptive behavior on the set of a horror film, his estranged daughter (Ryan Simpkins) wonders if he has slipped again or if something more sinister is at play.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, Tracey Bonner, and David Hyde Pierce.

Word on the Street: The film is from Joshua John Miller, known for his award-winning horror film The Final Girls (2016).

My Take: While Crowe is known for his roles in L.A. Confidential (1997), A Beautiful Mind (2001), and Gladiator (2000), my favorite is the 2016 film The Nice Guys that Crowe made with Ryan Gosling.

Green Border  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In select theaters on Friday, June 21, 2024.

Summary: Green Border is the story of people caught in a refugee crisis on the border between Poland and Belarus. We meet a family of refugees from Syria, an English teacher from Afghanistan, and a border guard assigned to keep them from crossing into Poland.

What to Watch For: The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film was screened at the Vatican as part of the 27th Tertio Millennio Film Festival.

My Take: The film is currently rated at an outstanding 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple  (2024)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  Premiering on Max on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple looks at a career as a guitar player for Bruce Springsteen, a solo artist, an activist, and an actor who came from the streets of New Jersey to play in some of the biggest stadium concerts of all time. 

What to Watch For:  Director Bill Teck is best known for his documentary One Day Since Yesterday: Peter Bogdanovich & the Lost American Film (2014).

Word on the Street: The film was first pitched as a three-part documentary back in 2006.

My Take: As a big fan of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, I will make sure I see this film.

Trigger Warning   (2024)

Rating:  TV-MA

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, June 21, 2024. 

Summary: In Trigger Warning, Parker (Jessica Alba) is a Special Forces commando who comes home to take ownership of her father’s bar after he suddenly dies. Parker soon finds out that her dad may have been murdered after a confrontation with a violent gang that has been running roughshod over the town with the help of local officials. 

What to Watch For: Jessica Alba is best known for her roles in the T.V. series Dark Angel, the Fantastic Four film series, and Sin City (2005).

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Moul Surya, who is known for her award-winning international 2017 film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts.

My Take: Dark Angel was one of my favorite TV series, which was from the mind of James Cameron. 

Bad Behaviour  (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Summary: Bad Behaviour occurs when a former child actress, Lucy (Jennifer Connelly), attends a retreat seeking enlightenment led by a spiritual leader (Ben Whishaw) who may or may not have the key to happiness. Halfway across the world is Lucy’s daughter, Dylan (Alice Englert), who has followed her mother’s footsteps in the film world as a stunt coordinator. Will the two ever find the happiness and connection that they need?

What to Watch For: This is actress Alice Englert’s (Ginger & Rosa, Beautiful Creatures) feature film directorial debut.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: Jennifer Connelly won an Academy Award for her role in A Beautiful Mind (2001), but she will always be Jenny Blake in the 1991 film The Rocketeer.
